Polymerupdate Speaker Interviews 04 Mar 2025
Interview with the CEO of APChemi
1. Please tell us about your current role. What are your key focus areas and responsibilities?
As CEO of APChemi Circular B.V., I lead our mission to transform plastic and biomass waste into valuable resources. We've developed 12 breakthrough patents in pyrolysis and oil purification technologies, deployed across 49 successful projects globally. My focus is on scaling up advanced recycling solutions through technology innovation, strategic partnerships, and project execution. Currently, we're expanding our 6KTA pyrolysis oil purification operations while developing multiple large-scale projects across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

2. In your opinion, what do you consider to be the greatest development in the plastics recycling industry in recent years?
The emergence of comprehensive legislation around plastic recycling is transforming our industry. The introduction of plastic taxes, recycled content mandates, and restrictions on incineration are creating powerful economic incentives for advanced recycling. For instance, rigid plastics now require 30% recycled content, increasing to 60% by 2029, while flexible packaging targets are set to double by 2028. These regulations are finally bridging the gap between technological capability and market deployment.

3. What special opportunities and challenges do you see in the Indian plastics recycling market compared to other regions?
India's plastics recycling market presents a unique opportunity with 90% of plastic waste currently going to landfills or incineration - representing an enormous untapped potential for advanced recycling. The key challenge lies in establishing reliable waste collection and segregation systems. However, with municipal corporations beginning to guarantee feedstock supply and growing corporate commitments to recycled content, we're seeing a rapid shift toward circular economy solutions.

4. How is the Indian government's policy and regulatory framework impacting the plastics recycling industry?
India's progressive policy framework, particularly the recent updates to plastic waste management rules, is catalyzing significant industry growth. The government's emphasis on recycled content targets, coupled with extended producer responsibility (EPR) guidelines, is creating a robust demand for advanced recycling solutions. Nevertheless, implementation challenges remain, especially in ensuring consistent feedstock supply for recycling facilities and establishing effective collection mechanisms.

5. How do you see the sector developing in the next five to ten years?
The advanced recycling sector is poised for exponential growth, driven by stricter regulations and increasing corporate commitments to sustainability. The critical factor will be addressing feedstock security through municipal partnerships and improving waste collection infrastructure. With APChemi's proven technology and growing market demand for high-quality recycled content, particularly in food-grade and pharmaceutical packaging, we anticipate rapid scaling of advanced recycling facilities across India.

6. You will be speaking at the Recycling and Compounding Expo in India. Could you give us a preview of what you will be talking about?
I'll be addressing the economics of advanced plastic recycling and debunking common misconceptions about recycled content costs. Using real-world data from our projects, I'll demonstrate how advanced recycling can be commercially viable while meeting the stringent quality requirements of FMCG companies. The presentation will provide a detailed cost-benefit analysis of incorporating recycled content in packaging, offering valuable insights for both manufacturers and brand owners.
